Handspun yarn - Eider wool, DK weight, 355 yards - Florist's Greens

$40.50 USD

Quantity Available:     1 only

This handspun yarn is shades of green. It was hand painted in the wool here at Edgewood Garden Studio.

This listing is for one 2-ply skein, weighing 4.1 oz., spun at an average of 1385 ypp (yards per pound), a DK weight. These 355 yards wrap at approximately 12-15. Like most handspun, it is somewhat thick and thin. This is a medium-grade wool, and some may find it not suitable for next-to-the-skin use.

Eider sheep have several different names: German Marsh, Oldenburg White Head, White-headed Marsh sheep, etc. The breed was developed along the North Sea coast in the middle 1800’s. by crossing the German short-tail marsh sheep raised for milk with several English long wool breeds, including Leicester, Cotswold, Hampshire, and Oxfordshire.  These sheep have a rugged lifestyle, living on the North Sea dikes. They eat the dike grasses, fertilize them and, in the process, tamp down the dikes that protect the lowlands from floods. They live outside throughout the year and cope well with cold, wet conditions. This is one of the reasons that they are being cross bred with some New Zealand sheep for that country’s wet and rainy areas.

My skeins are wound on a full 2-yard niddy-noddy. If you don’t have a large swift, let me know. Spun in a smoke-free, pet-friendly home.
