This is a hand painted roving, or more properly combed wool top, for hand spinning.

This roving is shades of purple, yellow and red.

Cheviot is best known as the breed used in the Scotch Tweed industry. The breed originated on the border of England and Scotland, in the Cheviot Hills and has been known as a recognized wool breed since the 14th century. Today, it is considered a dual purpose breed in the UK and a mutton breed in the US. It’s a hardy sheep that is lively and a good forager.

This is a wool which is loath to felt and quite durable, a good choice for socks, sweaters, mittens or weaving. It is a medium wool with a helical (spiral) crimp, a fiber length of about 3 to 4.5 inches, and is quite easy to spin. I would compare this UK grown Cheviot to some of the New Zealand Corriedale that we have had in the past, but with more spring and a bit more pliable. The micron count is in the high 20’s to low 30’s.

My rovings are dyed with fairly even distribution of colors. Photos are of each side of the coil, so you can see as much of the color as possible. These are the same rovings from which I spin my yarns, so I dye them for that.

We name our braids based on the inspirations we get from the colors, drawing on nature, literature, mythology, geography, and our lives and travels. Braids with the same name numbered sequentially are a matched set that were dyed together, although they may have different weights and look slightly different in the photos. Each colorway is unique; we may sometimes repeat names, when a new colorway strikes us the same way as an older one.
