Handspun yarn - Gotland Wool, worsted weight, 500 yards - Natural Gray
This is a naturally colored yarn, handspun from gray Gotland wool.
Gotland are a primitive variety of sheep, originating on the Swedish island of the same name. Viking adventurers brought back Karakul sheep from Russia, and crossed them with the local landrace sheep to produce the Gotland. Lambs are born with black fleece, and turn gray as they mature. They have a long, dense staple, around 29-34 microns in diameter. The yarn has a noticeable halo, and may be too prickly for next-to-the-skin use by those sensitive to such things, but it is surprisingly soft for a primitive breed.
This the same wool used for the Elven cloaks in the Lord of the Rings films.
This listing is for one two-ply skein, weighing 9.0 ounces., spun at an average of 890 ypp (yards per pound), a worsted weight. These 500 yards wrap at about 8-12.
My skeins are wound on a full 2-yard niddy-noddy. If you don’t have a large swift, let me know. Spun in a smoke-free, pet-friendly home.
