Mohair / Scandinavian Mountain 20/80% Wool Roving - Spring Smiles - 4.1 ounces
$14.35 USD
This is a hand painted roving, or more properly combed top, for hand spinning and felting.
This roving is shades of yellow, orange, pink and green.
This braid is a combination of 80% Scandinavian mountain wool with 20% mohair. The Scandinavian wool comes from double-coated sheep, meaning they have a coarser outer wool layer for repelling weather, and an inner finer wool layer for warmth. This roving includes some wool from both layers. The wool has a staple length of 3”-4.75” (80-120 mm) and a diameter of 33-36 microns.
Mohair is the hair from Angora goats. Mohair is a luxurious fiber that adds extra sheen and durability to this blend.
There are a few different breeds of mountain sheep in Scandinavia, but they all have a very old lineage. These sheep provided the wool for the sails on the Viking ships, among many other uses.
Our braids are dyed with fairly even distribution of colors. Photos are of each side of the coil, so you can see as much of the color as possible. These are the same braids from which I spin my yarns, so I dye them for that.
We name our braids based on the inspirations we get from the colors, drawing on nature, literature, mythology, geography, and our lives and travels. Braids with the same name numbered sequentially are a matched set that were dyed together, although they may have different weights and look slightly different in the photos. Each colorway is unique; we may sometimes repeat names, when a new colorway strikes us the same way as an older one.
